People with protruding abdomens often find it difficult to receive therapeutic care on conventional tables. In response to this need, ECOPOSTURAL has developed the C6880 table, a model specifically designed to improve the comfort and safety of these patients. <\/p>\n

In the process of design, development and certification of this solution, the Instituto de Biomec\u00e1nica (IBV) contributed its experience in the field of evaluation and validation of medical devices. The tests carried out included comfort and usability tests, both subjective – through user surveys – and objective, through contact pressure measurements. <\/p>\n

The study methodology was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia. Pregnant women and men with prominent abdomens rated the new table positively compared to conventional options. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The increased morphology of the abdomen can make it difficult to adopt the prone position (face down), which is ideal for some operations in the back area. This difficulty, which is accentuated as pregnancy progresses in pregnant women, also affects men with voluminous abdomens and can limit access to the benefits of physiotherapeutic treatment, making it difficult to perform an intervention or adequate treatment. <\/p>\n

Adopting this posture makes it easier for the therapist to manipulate the patient’s back safely and allows the patient to benefit from the therapeutic massage. Documented benefits in pregnant women include pain relief, stress reduction and<\/strong> improvements in labor and delivery, among others.[1]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a>,[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/strong>. Likewise, in overweight men, this type of intervention has been shown to promote mobility and improve circulation [3] ,[3] .[3]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n

To meet this need, ECOPOSTURAL has developed the C6880 table, which incorporates a patented pneumatic system. This system allows adjusting the table to different morphologies, facilitating the adaptation to people with heights between 1.50 and 2 meters and weights up to 250 kg, thus covering most of the potential patients. <\/p>\n

The C6880 table, for professional use in physiotherapy and related fields, see Figure 1, can be used in the conventional way, with the additional advantage of having a removable central section. This feature allows the creation of a cavity where, once the patient is positioned, an inflatable cushion adapts to the patient’s body shape. This makes it easier to accommodate the abdomen, breasts or head, depending on their morphology, providing greater comfort. <\/p>\n

The innovation of this solution was recognized by the jury and the public at the 2024 edition of the French trade fair R\u00e9\u00e9duca<\/em>, which focuses on the field of rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The jury, in particular, highlighted its “creative and innovative character, useful for both patients and therapists”. <\/p>\n

The study conducted by IBV evaluates the usability and comfort of the 6880 table, see Figure 1, in pregnant women and men with pronounced abdomen. The objective is to validate the hypothesis that its specific design improves patient comfort and facilitates access to physiotherapeutic therapy in a safe and effective manner. This work is part of a wider collaboration between ECOPOSTURAL and IBV in the framework of the elaboration of the documentation and tests necessary to complete the documentation corresponding to an MDR dossier for CE marking of the table as a medical device. In this context, ECOPOSTURAL participates as the entity responsible for the product, while the IBV intervenes as a collaborating body in tasks of evaluation, validation and technical development in the field of ergonomics applied to medical devices. <\/p>\n

MATERIAL AND METHODS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The study included six participants: four pregnant women in the third trimester of gestation without previous complications in pregnancy and two men with pronounced abdomen, all of them with recent experience in physiotherapeutic treatment. The methodology included the collection of anthropometric data (sex, weight, height and abdominal perimeter), measurement of pressure in the abdominal area with the Xsensor pressure measurement system, consisting of a blanket-type mat that recorded the pressures from the lower abdominal area to chest height. A comfort and usability questionnaire was also completed. The tests were performed in a single session at the IBV, following strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, with special attention to the safety of the pregnant women. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia. <\/p>\n

All the parameters evaluated, except the presence of discomfort (No discomfort \/ With discomfort) were assessed on a five-level scale: 1. Strongly agree\/Very comfortable, 2. <\/p>\n

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION<\/strong><\/h3>\n

CHARACTERIZATION OF THE USERS PARTICIPATING IN THE STUDY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Table 1 summarizes the anthropometric characteristics of the study participants.<\/p>\n

ASSESSMENT OF FUNCTIONAL AND COMFORT FACTORS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The table was rated very positively in terms of overall comfort, with 100% of participants rating it as “very comfortable” (33%) or “comfortable” (67%). As for the support for the protruding abdomen, 83% considered it “totally adequate” and 17% “adequate”. <\/p>\n

Sixty-seven percent of the patients reported no discomfort during use, while 33% reported some discomfort located in the shoulders or collarbone, mainly in women of smaller stature. Regarding the ease of getting on and off the table, 100% rated it positively (17% “very easy” and 83% “easy”). <\/p>\n

The perception of stability and safety was also high, with 83% “strongly agreeing” and 17% “agreeing” that the table offers good stability. In relation to positioning, 83% agreed that it allows maintaining an adequate posture without generating tension, and this same percentage rated the table as better or much better compared to a conventional table. <\/p>\n

Finally, all participants stated that they would feel comfortable in a prolonged physical therapy session, with 50% choosing “very comfortable” and 50% choosing “comfortable”.<\/p>\n

The results of these assessments, together with the details of the questions asked, are summarized in Figure 2.<\/p>\n

RESULTS OF PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS IN THE ABDOMINAL AREA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Table 2 shows the values of maximum and mean pressures recorded in the abdominal area. The mean pressures are below 32 mmHg, a value usually considered critical as a reference for the development of pressure ulcers if maintained for prolonged periods. The maximum pressures, on the other hand, are within the expected range for hospital bed mattresses and are recorded outside the abdominal area, mainly near its edges (lower abdomen or hip). <\/p>\n

(*) This value was reached at the lower edge of the abdominal hollow of the table, with pressure values similar to the other participants in the abdominal area corresponding to the risk zone.<\/p>\n

CONCLUSIONS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The ECOPOSTURAL C6880 table has been shown to provide a high level of comfort and postural adequacy in people with protruding abdomens. The results of the study support the initial hypothesis, indicating that this table favors the physiotherapeutic practice in a safe and comfortable way. Among the most valued aspects are its adjustability and customization, as well as the uniform distribution of weight and the reduction of tension in the dorsal region, due to a better positioning of the sword, and in the abdominal region, due to a better adjustment of the support, thanks to the abdominal cavity, which is also reflected in the values of the pressures reached in this area. <\/p>\n

Opportunities have been identified to further optimize product design related to pressure fit and facial cavity, which will give continuity to the line of collaboration between ECOPOSTURAL and IBV.<\/p>\n

This study is part of the technical and clinical evaluation process required for the completion of the CE marking dossier under Regulation (EU) 2017\/745 on medical devices. The results obtained in this study, together with the technical documentation and tests performed in the advanced infrastructures of the IBV Medical Lab(https:\/\/med-lab.ibv.org\/<\/a> )confirm that the product complies with the applicable essential safety and performance requirements. <\/p>\n
