Environmental volunteering day organised by Ecopostural Social Action Group in Vall d’Alba.

Last 28^th March, Ecopostural Social Action Group took part in an enriching day of environmental volunteering in collaboration with Connecta Natura, focused on the conservation of cultivated biodiversity in the regions of Castellón.

This initiative is part of the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR), promoting initiatives that have a positive impact on the local area, the environment and the local community, going beyond its core business of designing and manufacturing healthcare furniture.

Recover, preserve and learn

The event took place at one country house in Vall d’Alba, where a collection of traditional fruit varieties at risk of extinction is being developed. Ecopostural team took a guided tour of the premises aimed at the propagation and conservation of varieties, where they experienced first-hand the restoration project that Connecta Natura has been carrying out for over eight years.

During the presentation, the speaker elaborated on the importance of preserving local agricultural biodiversity and on the working methods used to keep traditional varieties alive, which are part of the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

Planting of traditional varieties

As a practical part of the event, the participants planted two specimens of great ethnobotanical value:

• A San Juanera pear tree, brought from La Nucia (Alicante)
• A Linares red plum tree, brought from Vilafranca del Cid (Castellón)

Each planting represents a small but significant step towards the revival of fruit varieties that are part of the region’s agricultural heritage.

Learning by doing: grafting workshop

The day concluded with a practical grafting workshop, where participants learnt traditional techniques such as the spike and chip grafting, thereby gaining an insight into the skills required for the active conservation of these varieties.
